Amazon to Launch Nova AI Model to Rival OpenAI’s GPT-4o
Amazon is developing a new advanced AI model, known as Nova, that aims to achieve superior performance and cost-effectiveness. The model, slated for release by June, will feature a hybrid approach to reasoning, designed to provide rapid and extended responses. Amazon intends for Nova to be ranked among the top five AI models in external evaluations.

Following the recent upgrade to Alexa with enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities, Amazon is focusing its efforts on developing Nova, a model with advanced reasoning capabilities. According to sources, Amazon is making a strategic move into sophisticated AI, with Nova positioned to directly compete with industry leaders such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
Scheduled for launch by June, the Nova model will incorporate a “hybrid reasoning” approach. This feature will enable it to generate both rapid responses and comprehensive, extended thinking within a single integrated system. Sources familiar with the project indicate that Amazon seeks to differentiate itself through Nova’s focus on cost efficiency and high-performance benchmarks.
The development of this AI model is being spearheaded by Amazon’s AGI team, under the leadership of head scientist Rohit Prasad. The clear objective is for Nova to rank among the top five AI models based on external performance evaluations. These benchmarks will assess crucial skills in software development and mathematical reasoning, including metrics from the SWE and Berkeley Function Calling Leaderboards.
Notably, Amazon has set a priority on creating a model that is significantly more affordable than existing commercial alternatives. Initial reports indicate that prior iterations of the Nova models were at least 75% less expensive than those third-party models accessible via Amazon’s Bedrock AI development platform.
This advancement occurs at a key moment in Amazon’s broader AI strategy, particularly following its substantial $8 billion investment in Anthropic. This move signals Amazon’s dedication to maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, and the company’s focus on both innovation and financial prudence.
