Amazon Expands Healthcare Services in India
Amazon has introduced diagnostic test booking on its Indian app, marking its latest move in the country’s healthcare sector. This development comes two years after the e-commerce giant launched its online pharmacy and six months after introducing teleconsultation services.
The company sees a significant opportunity in India’s healthcare market, with Jayaramakrishnan Balasubramanian, category leader at Amazon Medical, stating, “Healthcare is a daily need – second only to grocery in some ways. We’re not setting a fixed number goal, but this could become a very large and meaningful part of Amazon’s offerings in India.”
Amazon is partnering with diagnostics lab Orange Health to offer the service, initially in cities like Bengaluru, Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, with plans to scale up gradually.

The diagnostics service is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to create a connected care ecosystem in India. Balasubramanian explained, “We are looking to differentiate ourselves and become a connected care ecosystem where the customer will rely on having all their health records, all their doctor conversations, and all their medical prescriptions in one space.”
This move is in line with Amazon’s global healthcare strategy, but India is currently the only country offering diagnostics services. The decision is driven by the growing demand for wellness care and the largely unorganized diagnostics market in India.
Industry experts believe the diagnostics space in India has significant potential due to changing consumer preferences and higher profit margins. Tarun Sharma, senior fund manager and healthcare and consumer strategy head at 360 ONE Asset, noted, “Of the three primary revenue streams in the B2C healthtech space — teleconsultation, diagnostics, and pharmaceutical distribution — diagnostics remains the most significant profit pool.”
Amazon’s expansion into diagnostics is part of its larger investment in India. Last week, the company announced plans to invest over $233 million in 2025 to enhance its India operations.
In the fiscal year 2024, Amazon Seller Services, its marketplace arm, reported a revenue of ₹25,406 crore, up 14% from the previous year. The company’s net loss narrowed by 29% to ₹3,470 crore due to improved operational efficiencies.
