Amazon.com (AMZN.O) is launching a new team specifically focused on agentic artificial intelligence, according to an internal email viewed by Reuters on Tuesday. The goal is to help users and customers automate more aspects of their lives.
The new group will be headed by AWS executive Swami Sivasubramanian, the email from AWS CEO Matt Garman stated. “Agentic AI has the potential to be the next multi-billion business for AWS,” Garman wrote. Sivasubramanian, formerly vice president of AI and data, will report directly to Garman.
Agentic AI is designed to automate tasks for users, eliminating the need for them to prompt the systems to take action. Amazon showcased some of these capabilities last week with the announcement of an updated version of its voice service, Alexa, scheduled for release later this month to certain customers.
“We have the opportunity to help our customers innovate even faster and unlock more possibilities, and I firmly believe that AI agents are core to this next wave of innovation,” Garman expressed.
Neither Amazon nor its representatives immediately responded to requests for comment.
Also on Tuesday, AWS senior vice president Peter DeSantis communicated a series of further reorganizations within AWS in an internal email. AWS has been a major source of profit for Amazon for years. These changes include moving AI groups Bedrock and SageMaker, as well as the hardware engineering team, under the compute organization. A new group will combine customer experience and commerce functions.
DeSantis stated that the changes are intended to “accelerate innovation.”
Shares of Amazon, headquartered in Seattle, saw a slight decrease of less than 1%, closing at $204.81.
