Major tech companies Amazon and Google have joined a pledge to support a significant expansion of nuclear energy worldwide.

On Wednesday, the companies signed the commitment, aiming to triple the world’s nuclear energy capacity by 2050. The announcement occurred on the sidelines of the CERAWeek conference in Houston.

Shale company Occidental and Japanese heavy machinery maker IHI Corp also endorsed the pledge.

The World Nuclear Association (WNA), the nuclear industry group facilitating the pledge, anticipates that more companies from various sectors will join in the coming months. The sectors include maritime, aviation, and oil and gas industries, according to a press release from the WNA.

This pledge builds upon a similar commitment made in 2023 by over 30 countries, which also targeted a tripling of nuclear capacity by 2050.

Nuclear energy currently generates 9% of the world’s electricity, derived from 439 operational power reactors. As of early 2025, approximately 411 nuclear power reactors are in operation globally, with a combined capacity of 371 gigawatts.
