Amazon Announces $10 Billion Investment in North Carolina Cloud Computing Campus
Amazon is set to invest $10 billion in a new high-tech cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) innovation campus in Richmond County, North Carolina. The project is expected to create at least 500 new high-paying, high-tech jobs in the region.
North Carolina Governor Stein expressed enthusiasm about the investment, stating, “Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work and innovate, and I am pleased that North Carolina will stay at the forefront of all that’s ahead as we continue to attract top technology companies like Amazon.” Stein emphasized that Amazon’s investment is among the largest in state history and will bring significant economic benefits to Richmond County.
The new campus will feature state-of-the-art data centers equipped with computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment, and other technology infrastructure. These facilities will support cloud computing capabilities and generative AI technologies for customers across various industries, including automotive, healthcare, manufacturing, financial services, and the public sector.
David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer, highlighted the company’s commitment to driving innovation in cloud computing and AI. “This investment will position North Carolina as a hub for cutting-edge technology, create hundreds of high-skilled jobs, and drive significant economic growth,” Zapolsky said. Amazon plans to collaborate with local leaders, suppliers, and educational institutions to develop the next generation of tech talent.
Local officials welcomed Amazon’s investment, with Rep. Ben Moss stating, “Rural communities like ours can lead the way in technology advancements, including artificial intelligence.” The Richmond County Board of County Commissioners Chairman, Rick Watkins, added that the project represents the largest capital expenditure investment in North Carolina’s history and will transform the local economy.
The Energy Way Industrial Park has been selected as the site for Amazon’s new campus. The project is expected to bring high-paying jobs and improve the quality of life for local residents. As Watkins noted, “Working together, our possibilities are limitless!”
