Amazon Web Services Enhances Sustainability in Mississippi Data Centers

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is taking significant steps to reduce its environmental impact in Mississippi by incorporating recycled water and advanced liquid cooling technology in its data centers. The tech giant is developing two new facilities in Madison County, representing the largest corporate capital investment in Mississippi’s history.

    Sustainable Water Practices

AWS is expanding its use of recycled water across its data center operations, including the new facilities in Mississippi. This initiative is expected to conserve over 80 million gallons of drinking water annually in the state and 530 million gallons nationwide by 2030. The company plans to utilize recycled water from the local water system that will serve the data centers once operational.

“Amazon and local stakeholders, including MCEDA (Madison County Economic Development Authority) and local water utilities, have been working together over the past year to identify sustainable water supply options,” said Joey Deason, executive director of MCEDA. “This first-of-its-kind effort for the use of reclaimed water in the state will help preserve valuable potable water resources and demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability by Amazon and local utilities.”

    Advancing Cooling Technology

In addition to water conservation, AWS is implementing liquid cooling technology in its new data centers to enhance efficiency and support high-density AI workloads. This innovation will allow for more efficient cooling of high-density computer chips, minimizing energy use while maintaining performance.

“Data centers must evolve to meet AI’s transformative demands,” said Ian Buck, vice president of hyperscale at NVIDIA. “By enabling advanced liquid cooling solutions, AI infrastructure can be efficiently cooled while minimizing energy use. Our work with AWS on their liquid cooling rack design will allow customers to run demanding AI workloads with exceptional performance and efficiency.”

    Economic Impact

The Mississippi project represents the largest corporate capital investment in the state’s history, with AWS developing two sites spanning 927 acres and 786 acres respectively. This investment not only advances AWS’s sustainability goals but also contributes significantly to the local economy.

AWS achieved its goal of matching 100% of its electricity consumption with renewable energy in 2023, seven years ahead of its 2030 target. The company continues to expand its sustainability efforts through innovative technologies and strategic partnerships with local stakeholders.
