Amazon Web Services (AWS) will invest approximately $8.2 billion in the western Indian state of Maharashtra over the next few years, according to a recent announcement by the country’s information technology ministry.
India has been actively promoting the development of local cloud data storage solutions. The country’s cloud services market, valued at an estimated $8.3 billion in 2023, is projected to reach $24.2 billion by 2028, according to a report from International Data Corporation.
“Along with the investment, there will be significant growth in employment,” stated Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology. He added that the investments are slated to be implemented by 2029-2030.
Vaishnaw also indicated that Amazon will deploy its own graphics processing units, cutting-edge technologies, and cloud management services within India.
The e-commerce giant currently operates two data centers in the Indian subcontinent: one launched in Mumbai in 2016 and another in Hyderabad, which commenced operations in 2022.
Last year, Amazon revealed plans to invest an additional $2 billion in the country to bolster its e-commerce business.
