Amazon Announces Multi-Billion Dollar Cloud Investment in India
MUMBAI, India – Amazon Web Services (AWS) is set to significantly expand its presence in India with a planned investment of around $8.2 billion in the state of Maharashtra over the next few years.
The announcement, made on Monday by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, underscores India’s growing importance in the global cloud computing landscape. The country has been actively encouraging the development of local cloud data storage capabilities.
According to a recent report by International Data Corporation (IDC), the Indian cloud services market was valued at $8.3 billion in 2023. Projections estimate that the market will surge to $24.2 billion by 2028, reflecting robust growth and adoption across various sectors.
“Along with the investment, there will be significant growth in employment,” stated Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology. He added that the investment rollout is expected to occur by 2029-2030. AWS will deploy its advanced technologies, including graphics processing units (GPUs), and cloud management services in India to support its expansion initiatives, Vaishnaw said.
Amazon currently operates two data centers in India. The first was launched in Mumbai in 2016, followed by a second data center in Hyderabad, which commenced operations in 2022.
This commitment follows Amazon’s earlier announcement last year of an additional $2 billion investment in India to bolster its e-commerce operations in the country.
