Availity Modernizes Healthcare Technology through Collaboration with AWS
Availity, the largest real-time health information network in the U.S., is accelerating its innovation cycle, improving security and resiliency by migrating hundreds of applications to Amazon Web Services (AWS), and rebuilding its critical revenue cycle management application for the cloud. This transformation has enabled the company to accelerate time to market with daily software updates and process claims 87.5% faster, improving customer service.
Opportunity | Realizing the Full Potential of Cloud Computing
Availity supports over 2,000 health plans and 3 million providers, processing 13 billion transactions annually. The company aims to reduce infrastructure costs with pay-as-you-go pricing and optimize resource allocation by moving its systems to the cloud. After considering several cloud options, Availity chose AWS to accelerate its modernization journey.
“Using AWS, we can build seamless, well-integrated services that support healthcare-grade security, observability, and data governance,” said Michael Privat, chief architect and chief data officer at Availity. Availity has migrated 90% of its IT workloads to AWS and plans to move the remaining systems to the AWS Cloud in 2025.
Solution | Maximizing Cloud Value with AWS Migration and Training Support
Availity worked with AWS experts to migrate its Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) application to AWS. The collaboration involved a comprehensive assessment of existing infrastructure, strategic planning, and architectural reviews for optimal AWS performance. Availity also turned to AWS Training and Certification experts to equip its employees with AWS skills.
“The AWS experts were truly part of our team. They had a solid understanding of our challenges and objectives and knew how to further enhance resiliency, security, and performance,” said Jack Hunt, chief technology officer at Availity. Nearly 800 of Availity’s developers have completed AWS Training to support their cloud migration.
Outcome | Enhancing Security and Resiliency, Reducing Development Time
By working with AWS, Availity has achieved compliance with the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP), one of the highest U.S. Government regulatory standards. Availity has also improved its disaster recovery posture, reducing its Recovery Time Objective (RTO) from hours to minutes.
Availity is modernizing its technology infrastructure, reducing routine management time, and accelerating innovation. The company can now push out software releases daily and scale its infrastructure rapidly as workloads increase. With the support of AWS experts, Availity has expanded its adoption of generative AI-driven solutions, implementing Amazon Q services that have enhanced development workflows and data consumption.
“There are so many things we can do using AWS that we couldn’t do before, like scaling our database to a bigger engine in seconds to minimize latency and processing claims in 30 minutes instead of up to 4 hours—an 87.5% improvement,” said Privat.
