BBVA Expands AI Implementation to Boost Employee Productivity
BBVA, a Spanish banking giant, has announced a significant expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities across its global workforce. The bank has partnered with Google Cloud to provide its 100,000 employees with access to Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, through various tools including the standalone Gemini app, Google Workspace with Gemini, and Google’s AI-powered research assistant, NotebookLM.
This move builds upon BBVA’s previous AI adoption. A year ago, the bank introduced ChatGPT Enterprise licenses through a partnership with OpenAI, initially procuring 3,300 licenses. By May 2025, this number was increased to 11,000 licenses. According to BBVA’s internal data, the use of ChatGPT resulted in employees saving an average of 2.8 hours per week by automating tasks such as translations, document summaries, coding assistance, and legal analysis of financial information.

The recent partnership with Google Cloud is expected to further enhance productivity across the organization. “We expect that the widespread adoption of generative AI across these tools will improve productivity and the work experience of all employees, regardless of their role,” stated Juan Ortigosa, BBVA’s global head of workplace.
To ensure responsible AI usage, BBVA has introduced a mandatory AI training program called “AI Express.” This program aligns with the European Union’s AI Act and BBVA’s internal data protection and confidentiality policies. Access to the new Google AI tools will be granted only to employees who have completed this training.
The bank’s proactive approach to AI integration demonstrates its commitment to leveraging technology to enhance operational efficiency and employee experience. As of May 2025, 83% of BBVA’s licensed ChatGPT users accessed the tool daily, creating approximately 3,000 specialized assistants for specific tasks. This level of engagement underscores the potential for AI to transform banking operations and employee productivity.
By continuing to adopt and expand AI capabilities, BBVA is positioning itself at the forefront of technological innovation in the banking sector. The bank’s strategic investments in AI tools and training programs highlight its dedication to creating a more efficient and effective work environment for its global workforce.
