BD (NYSE: BDX) has announced the launch of its new hemodynamic monitoring platform, HemoSphere Alta, which utilizes predictive AI algorithms to help clinicians proactively manage blood pressure instability and optimize blood flow during medical procedures. This advanced technology is designed to prevent potentially life-threatening situations and represents the most sophisticated hemodynamic monitoring solution available in the market.
The HemoSphere Alta platform is the first product launch from BD’s Advanced Patient Monitoring business, which was acquired through the purchase of Edwards’ Critical Care business last year. A key feature of this innovative system is the cerebral autoregulation index (CAI), a pioneering parameter that indicates whether a patient’s brain can maintain stable blood flow despite fluctuations in blood pressure. This provides clinicians with personalized insights into a patient’s specific blood pressure requirements.

The CAI is accessed through a noninvasive ForeSight IQ sensor placed on the patient’s forehead, which works in conjunction with an Acumen IQ sensor connected to the patient’s arterial line. Additionally, HemoSphere Alta includes the Acumen Hypotension Prediction Index software, which forecasts potential low blood pressure events in patients.
Other notable features of the HemoSphere Alta system include an enhanced user interface with a high-resolution, customizable touchscreen display, as well as voice and gesture command options for hands-free operation. These features allow clinicians to silence alarms and switch between views more efficiently.
“HemoSphere Alta represents a significant milestone in our continuum of connected care innovations,” said Tim Patz, president of BD Advanced Patient Monitoring. “By redefining the clinician experience with more streamlined workflows and improved usability, we’re enhancing the quality of care for patients.”
The integration of AI-driven algorithms and machine learning in HemoSphere Alta provides clinicians with valuable insights and clinical decision support, ultimately contributing to better patient outcomes.
