Gates in India: Discussions on Technology, Health, and Development
This meeting occurred during Gates’ recent visit to India, which marked the 25th anniversary of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Throughout his trip, Gates engaged with various key figures to explore India’s progress in technology, health, and overall development.
His itinerary included talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where Gates expressed admiration for India’s forward-thinking approaches to both local and global innovation. He also met with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda to review ongoing healthcare collaborations, specifically focusing on maternal health improvements, immunization programs, and sanitation initiatives. In addition, Gates conferred with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss development challenges and opportunities presented by innovation in India.
Demonstrating the foundation’s commitment to grassroots empowerment, Gates visited the Indian Agricultural Research Institute’s Pusa Campus in New Delhi. There, he observed training sessions for rural women operating drones under the Namo Drone Didi Scheme, which aims to bolster women’s independence and economic prospects in rural regions. The visit also marked a significant milestone as the Gates Foundation’s Board of Trustees convened in the Global South for the first time, underscoring the significance of India’s contribution to global health and development.
In a blog post reflecting on his trip, Gates noted, “I came away with new ideas because India is full of smart, ambitious people tackling some of the world’s hardest problems in creative ways.”
