Bowling Green State University is set to introduce a new major next fall: AI + X. This innovative degree program allows students to combine the study of artificial intelligence with a specific field of study, such as history, mathematics, or journalism. The program, pending approval from the Ohio Department of Higher Education, takes a unique approach by focusing not just on the technological aspects of AI, but on its applications across various disciplines.
What is AI + X?
The AI + X degree program is designed to enable students to apply AI technologies in domain-specific applications. According to Jake Lee, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science at BGSU, “Whereas most of the AI programs focus on the creation of AI, we believe that students can employ the technologies available through AI in a domain specific application.” This approach allows students to leverage AI techniques to enhance their understanding and work in their chosen field.
Applications in Various Fields
The program is particularly exciting for students in fields like history, journalism, and physics. For instance, history majors can use AI to analyze historical photographs, identifying architectures or transportation changes over time. Lee explained, “If they have historical photographs of Bowling Green downtown from 1900 to 2000, then they can actually use AI techniques to analyze how those series of historical photographs are used to identify architectures or transportation.” This demonstrates how AI can be a powerful tool in understanding historical context and changes.
Addressing AI’s Limitations
One of the key benefits of the AI + X program is its focus on understanding the limitations and potential inaccuracies of AI. Lee noted, “If it’s just a use of AI, it’s difficult to understand whether this is a fake or not. However, if [students] understand the core of how the AI technology algorithm works, they will actually understand how to use the output of the AI in their decision making.” By teaching students about both the capabilities and limitations of AI, the program aims to produce more discerning users of AI technology.
Teaching AI Responsibly
The introduction of AI into the curriculum comes at a time when the technology is still relatively new to many. Lee acknowledged that AI is controversial but emphasized the need for responsible integration into education. “We are in the transition mode. AI is relatively new for some people, but they actually need to know how to incorporate this use of AI into their curriculum.” The AI + X major is designed to do just that, with many of its required courses already incorporating AI in a responsible manner.

By combining AI with other disciplines, Bowling Green State University is offering students a unique opportunity to enhance their field of study with cutting-edge technology. This approach not only prepares students for a rapidly changing technological landscape but also equips them with the critical thinking skills needed to effectively utilize AI in their future careers.
