Can AI Improve Your Golf Game?

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming various aspects of our lives, and golf is no exception. The question remains: can AI actually improve your golf game? To find out, I conducted an experiment using ChatGPT, a sophisticated AI tool, in conjunction with my Foresight Falcon launch monitor.

    The Experiment

I fed my launch monitor data into ChatGPT and asked it to create a smarter, data-driven golf practice plan. The results were impressive, demonstrating AI’s potential in player development and performance analysis.

Why Use AI for Golf Training?

Large Language Models like ChatGPT have been trained on vast amounts of text data, including instructional content, golf blogs, biomechanics textbooks, and training regimens. This training enables ChatGPT to do more than just provide generic answers. It can analyze input data, identify patterns, and offer structured guidance. When paired with accurate data from a launch monitor, you essentially have a virtual swing coach at your disposal.

    The Process

    1. Data Collection: I used the Foresight Falcon launch monitor to gather data on my shots with various clubs, including ball speed, spin, carry distance, height, and distance to pin.
    2. Analysis: ChatGPT analyzed the data to identify my strengths and weaknesses.
    3. Customized Practice Plan: Based on the analysis, ChatGPT recommended specific drills and adjustments for each club and created a 90-day practice plan.
    4. Performance Benchmarks: It set performance benchmarks for distance, spin, dispersion, and scoring.

    Results

ChatGPT delivered a comprehensive practice plan that included:

    • Club-by-club performance breakdown
    • Drills to address inconsistencies in face contact or launch angle
    • Weekly practice structure with progress tracking
    • Monthly focus blocks (e.g., strike quality, distance control, scoring under pressure)
    • Specific benchmarks for improvement (e.g., Driver: 270+ yards carry, spin between 1900–2400 rpm)

    Key Takeaways

    • AI can serve as an assistant coach, providing structure and clarity to your practice.
    • It turns raw data into actionable decisions, making practice more efficient and focused.
    • Combining ChatGPT with a high-accuracy launch monitor offers insights that are both measurable and actionable.

    Conclusion

While ChatGPT won’t replace your swing coach or provide real-time feedback, it can help you plan better, practice smarter, and stay accountable. For data-driven golfers looking to improve with purpose, integrating AI into your training regimen could be a game-changer.
