Carroll Independent School District (ISD) is teaming up with Foundations Counseling, LLC, and Southlake Wait Until 8th to host a lunch-and-learn event for district families. The event aims to explore the impact of technology on students’ mental health and well-being.
The meeting will take place on April 30 at noon at the Carroll ISD Administration Center in the Lonesome Dove room. Parents and guardians are invited to attend and learn how to help children develop healthy technology habits.
This initiative is supported by Wait Until 8th, an organization that encourages parents to delay giving their children smartphones until they are at least 14 years old. Experts in child psychology, internet safety, and technology agree that younger children need protection from the harmful effects of technology.
According to Wait Until 8th’s website, many children receive their first smartphones in elementary school, with most having a personal device by fourth grade. The organization highlights several potential risks associated with early smartphone use, including:
- Smartphone addiction
- Academic distraction
- Changes to children’s brain development
- Sleep disturbances and behavioral changes
- Increased risk of cyberbullying
For more information about the event, parents can email Guidance and Counseling Coordinator Deborah Warner.
This event addresses growing concerns about the impact of technology on children’s mental health and provides parents with guidance on promoting healthy technology use at home.
