China to Strengthen AI and Intellectual Property Safeguards
China’s Supreme People’s Court has announced plans to enhance protections for artificial intelligence (AI) and intellectual property (IP) during 2025. This initiative aims to support the growth of emerging industries within the country.
The commitment was revealed in the annual work report delivered by Chief Justice Zhang Jun to the National People’s Congress (NPC) in Beijing.
“The top court supports the lawful application of artificial intelligence and ‘protects innovation strictly in accordance with the law’,” Zhang stated. He added that measures would be implemented to penalize infringements involving AI technology, thereby promoting orderly and regulated development.
AI technology relies on vast amounts of data, raising privacy concerns.

This move comes as China seeks to harness the potential of AI to advance its industrial capabilities and lessen its reliance on Western technology, particularly in light of restrictions imposed by the United States.
