China’s Supreme Court to Strengthen AI and IP Protections
China’s highest court has announced plans to bolster protections for artificial intelligence and intellectual property (IP) this year, reflecting the nation’s commitment to fostering new industries and technological innovation. The announcement was made as part of the Supreme People’s Court’s annual work report.
Chief Justice Zhang Jun delivered the report to the National People’s Congress (NPC) in Beijing. Zhang emphasized the court’s support for the lawful application of AI and its dedication to safeguarding innovation through strict legal enforcement. He stated that the court has “taken measures to punish infringements using AI technology, promoting orderly and regulated development.”

China aims to leverage AI to move up the industrial value chain and reduce its reliance on Western technology, including overcoming limitations imposed by U.S. sanctions. This strategic focus underscores the importance of protecting AI-related innovations.
