Pioneering Health-Tech and Indigenous Manufacturing: The Codix Pharma Story
Codix Pharma has emerged as a leader in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical landscape, driving innovation and technological advancements since its inception in 2008.
Their journey began with a commitment to providing high-quality, technology-driven healthcare solutions, and it has since expanded to include diagnostics and wellness products. Codix Pharma initially transformed diabetes management by introducing HbA1c testing, a first for Nigeria. The company then led the introduction of Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kits, implementing campaigns designed to combat common misconceptions. Today, Codix is recognized as a key player in cardiometabolic care, supplying hospitals and patients with therapeutics and point-of-care devices for diabetes, hypertension, and heart conditions.
With over 95 NAFDAC-registered products, Codix has become a leading importer of Rapid Diagnostic Test kits in Nigeria, distributing over 100 million tests since 2010. The company has represented leading RDT manufacturers, including ABBOTT Diagnostics and SD Biosensor.
In a strategic move towards indigenous manufacturing, Codix launched Colexa Biosensor, an in-vitro diagnostics factory. This facility, the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa, produces blood glucose meters and strips. Colexa Biosensor is responsible for the development of the OnPoint blood glucose monitoring system, the first made in Nigeria.
A major milestone came in December 2024, when Colexa Biosensor received World Health Organization (WHO) approval to locally package the WHO pre-qualified STANDARD Q HIV 1/2 Ab 3-Line Test. This marks the first instance of such approval in Africa, highlighting the company’s commitment to maintaining quality standards for both Nigeria and the global market.
At the helm of Codix Pharma and Colexa Biosensor is CEO Mr. Sammy Ogunjimi, whose leadership has driven the company’s progress. Codix has expanded its operations across Africa, with a presence in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, and Kenya. Colexa Biosensor is looking to export its products across West Africa.
Since its inception, Colexa Biosensor has gained recognition from key stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI), and the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC). International development partners like the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other global donor organizations show their support.
