Revolutionary Urological Health Monitoring from Cornell Startup
CareTech Human, a startup based at Cornell University, is developing a groundbreaking cloud-connected device that fits inside a standard toilet bowl to passively monitor critical indicators of urological health. The innovative technology measures frequency, volume, and flow of urination without requiring any user interaction, providing valuable data for patients suffering from conditions like overactive bladder and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
The device uses advanced infrared sensing combined with a proprietary AI platform to automate health tracking. “Our system has very low user requirements, and the data is processed through our secure cloud infrastructure where we apply sophisticated AI algorithms,” explained Dan Matsui, founder and CEO of CareTech Human. “We’ve managed to develop these complex algorithms in a way that’s very low power-demanding, making our operational costs extremely low.”
Clinical Trials and Partnerships
CareTech Human has secured $500,000 in pre-seed equity funding to conduct clinical trials in partnership with prestigious healthcare institutions including Weill Cornell Medicine and Cayuga Health. The trials are exploring the device’s potential to replace manual bladder diaries with automated, objective tracking for patients with specific urological conditions.
“The goal is to make data collection effortless and much more accurate,” Matsui stated. While initially focusing on overactive bladder and benign prostatic hyperplasia, the technology has potential applications for other urological conditions. The company’s participation in Cornell’s Center for Life Science Ventures has been instrumental in its progress, providing valuable mentorship, research resources, and connections.
Future Plans and Vision
Looking ahead, CareTech Human plans to build on its current momentum as it prepares for a larger fundraising round. The company aims to expand its manufacturing capabilities and bring the device to broader clinical and consumer markets. Matsui envisions a future where their solution is not only fully automated and maintenance-free but also configurable based on individual disease history and predispositions, paving the way for personalized medicine in urological health.
