Discord Explores AI-Powered Solutions for Community Engagement
Discord is considering innovative ways to enhance user experience by leveraging AI technology to help members catch up on conversations and improve knowledge sharing within communities. According to Peter Sellis, Discord’s SVP of product, the platform is exploring features that facilitate more structured knowledge sharing, similar to forum-style discussions.

The company is investigating the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) to summarize lengthy conversations between multiple users, making it easier to share and syndicate information on the web. Sellis noted that this could transform a “really poorly structured shareable object” into something more accessible.
One of the challenges Discord faces is balancing the needs of large community servers with those of smaller, more intimate groups. Sellis highlighted that 90% of activity on Discord occurs in smaller servers, making it essential to create a comfortable and familiar environment for users across different community sizes.
The platform is also seeing a trend where “everything is starting to kind of look like a game,” with Discord potentially serving as a social layer to enhance engagement and multiplayer capabilities in various applications. The success of communities like Midjourney, which turned AI image generation into a multiplayer experience, and the recently launched Wordle app on Discord, supports this vision.
While these developments are not imminent and are subject to change, Sellis emphasized that Discord’s engineers and product designers are motivated to solve the challenges associated with community engagement and knowledge sharing.
