Empowering Women to Shape the Future of Technology
Microsoft’s TechHer programme recently hosted an open event broadcast live across multiple UK cities, focusing on empowering women in the tech industry. The event featured various panel discussions, motivational speakers, and networking opportunities, covering topics such as AI, productivity, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Emma Tolhurst from Accenture set the tone for the event, emphasizing the critical need for women’s representation in the tech industry. “In a world where technology is evolving at lightning speed, ensuring women are empowered and represented in the tech industry is more critical than ever,” she stated. Tolhurst highlighted the importance of diverse perspectives, emotional intelligence, and inclusive innovation in shaping the future of technology.

One of the key themes discussed was the importance of focus in a distraction-free environment. Francesca Parmigiani, Microsoft Research Leader, emphasized that “focusing on work is a practice” that requires dedicating time without distractions to enhance productivity and creativity.
The role of AI in enhancing productivity and solving complex challenges was another significant topic. Alkim Mete, Microsoft Azure Data and AI Lead, shared her perspective on using AI effectively to simplify processes and improve productivity. She encouraged participants to reflect on how AI can support their work and personal lives, highlighting the need to balance innovation with presence in both professional and personal spheres.
Lina Chan, Holland & Barrett’s Director of Women’s Health, championed the concept of “purposeful meetings” as a cornerstone of effective teamwork. She emphasized the importance of setting clear agendas and outcomes for meetings to ensure they are productive and respectful of participants’ time.

The event also addressed the challenge of maintaining work-life balance, particularly when working from home. Participants suggested “divider activities” such as exercise classes, meditation, or spending time with loved ones as ways to decompress and transition from work to personal life.
Jalila Keita from CGI shared a candid moment about overcoming self-doubt and the importance of authenticity in professional settings. Her vulnerability exemplified the supportive spirit of TechHer, where women can share their experiences and support one another.
Lauren Dixon, Chair of TechHer, concluded that the programme is not just an initiative but a movement to empower women to shape the future of technology. Through discussions on focus, balance, and purposeful connections, TechHer aims to address industry challenges and celebrate women’s contributions to innovation.
The event underscored the importance of resilience, authenticity, and empowerment in the tech industry, highlighting that initiatives like TechHer are crucial for creating a more inclusive and diverse future in technology.
