Introduction
Caregiving is a complex and demanding role that presents physical, emotional, and financial challenges. The increasing burden of chronic diseases and an ageing population has amplified these challenges. Digital health technologies (DHTs), including mobile health apps, wearable devices, and telemedicine platforms, offer potential support for caregivers. However, their integration into caregiving remains underexplored.
Methodology
This qualitative study conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 informal caregivers in Singapore. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling, ensuring diversity in demographics and caregiving experiences. Thematic analysis was used to identify key challenges and potential solutions.
Key Findings
Caregivers reported using various DHTs, including HealthHub app, Fitbit wearables, and video teleconsultation services. Seven key challenges emerged:
- Lack of formal training in DHT use
- Difficulties in providing timely care
- Limitations of teleconsultations for complex needs
- Poor app usability
- Cost concerns
- Age-related digital literacy gaps
- Cultural tensions in adopting DHTs
Discussion
The study highlights significant barriers to DHT adoption among informal caregivers. While DHTs offer benefits such as enhanced healthcare accessibility and efficiency, caregivers face numerous challenges. The findings underscore the need for targeted solutions, including structured caregiver training, improved app design, equitable access, and age-inclusive healthcare services.
Conclusion
This study contributes to understanding the challenges faced by informal caregivers in integrating DHTs into their caregiving practices. The findings inform the development of inclusive, user-centered strategies to enhance DHT adoption and utilization, ultimately improving caregiver resilience and care outcomes in ageing societies.
