Fullerton College Team Soars to Autonomous Drone Race Finals
The Autonomous Aerial Robotics League (A2RL) Drone Competition, a leading event in autonomous drone technology, is set to feature the Fullerton College Hornet Drone Team in its finals. The team, led by student Eric Park, qualified for the A2RL Autonomous Drone Race finals, scheduled for April 11-12 in Abu Dhabi.
As one of only 12 international teams competing for a $1 million prize, the Hornet Drone Team embodies collaboration. This unique team brings together expertise from Fullerton College, students from the University of California, Irvine, and skilled pilots from Cyclone Drone Racing.
Park and his team have been meticulously developing the artificial intelligence powering their autonomous racing drone since October 2024. Their innovative work raises the bar for advancements in both AI and drone technology, with the potential to shape the future of autonomous systems.
Park, a community college student, expressed his excitement about showcasing his technical skills on an international stage. “Qualifying for the finals is a personal achievement, which highlights the college’s support,” he noted.
Dr. Jay Seidel, director of the Fullerton College Drone Lab, emphasized the significance of the opportunity: “The chance to compete at this level underscores the incredible talent and dedication of our students and partners.”
Joining Park on the Hornet Drone Team are UC Irvine students Eric Pedley and Esh Vig, alongside pilots Matthew Bamford and Breton Woodford from the Drone Champions League.
In addition to the A2RL success, Park was also named a finalist in the inaugural Pfizer Drone Racing League AI Flight Competition. This competition challenges participants to push the limits of autonomous flight, and Park’s success underscores his expertise in applying AI to meet complex technical challenges.
Fullerton College President Dr. Cynthia Olivo, who has been in her position since January 2023, voiced the college’s pride in the team’s accomplishments.
The Hornet Drone Team’s qualification for the A2RL finals and Eric’s success in the Pfizer DRL AI Flight Competition exemplify the innovative educational opportunities that Fullerton College offers.
