Ten of the world’s leading airport operators have joined forces through Airports for Innovation (A4I) to test cutting-edge startup technologies aimed at transforming sustainability, AI, and passenger experience. The initiative, which began with a call for proposals between September 12 and October 28, 2024, attracted 292 submissions from 283 startups across 36 countries.
Challenge Categories and Winners
The A4I coalition, comprising Aeroporti di Roma, Aena, Athens International Airport, Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Vancouver International Airport, Munich Airport, Dubai Airports, Oman Airports, and Narita International Airport, identified four key challenge areas: seamless travel experience, sustainable aviation, smart luggage revolution, and AI-powered airports.
The winning startups were:
- Seamless Travel Experience: GoodMaps, with its innovative indoor navigation platform using LiDAR scanning and computer vision positioning.
- Sustainable Aviation: Janta Power, developer of the world’s first scalable 3D solar solution.
- Smart Luggage Revolution: Pattern, which integrates robotics and data infrastructure for optimized baggage handling.
- AI-Powered Airports: Tomorrow.io and Ultralytics, with their precise weather forecasting and advanced vision AI models, respectively.
Pilot Projects and Future Plans
The selected startups began their pilot projects with a kick-off event on May 22, 2025. Over the coming months, they will validate their innovations in real-world airport environments across A4I member hubs. The pilots aim to assess the effectiveness and scalability of these solutions, potentially setting new industry benchmarks and reshaping the future of air travel.

This collaborative effort marks a significant step in industry-wide innovation, focusing on enhancing operational efficiency, improving sustainability, and delivering superior passenger experiences. As the pilots progress, the aviation industry awaits the potential breakthroughs that could redefine the travel experience.
