Google announced on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, that it has significantly bolstered its ad safety measures through enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The tech giant made more than 50 improvements to its large language models (LLMs) in 2024, according to Alex Rodriguez, general manager of ads safety at Google.
These updates accelerated complex investigations, enabling Google to identify fraudulent activities and illegitimate payment information during account setup. As a result, the company prevented billions of policy-violating ads from being displayed to consumers while ensuring legitimate businesses could advertise more efficiently. Rodriguez highlighted these achievements in Google’s 2024 Ads Safety Report.
Key Enhancements and Achievements
One of the significant advancements was in combating AI-generated public figure impersonation ads. Google developed countermeasures, including a new policy that suspends advertisers promoting such scams. This led to the permanent suspension of over 700,000 offending advertiser accounts and a subsequent 90% drop in reports of this scam type.
The report also detailed other areas where Google focused its efforts, including:
- Advertiser identity verification to enhance transparency and prevent suspended bad actors from returning
- Advertiser policy enforcement to prohibit harmful content
- Restricted ads to ensure sensitive content is shown only to appropriate audiences
- Publisher enforcement to help publishers monetize content while upholding their policies
Statistics and Impact
In 2024, Google’s AI-driven efforts resulted in the removal of 5.1 billion advertisements, restriction of 9.1 billion ads, and suspension of 39.2 million advertiser accounts. The company emphasized that the ad safety landscape is constantly evolving due to technological advancements, emerging abuse tactics, and global events.
“The ad safety landscape is constantly changing, reshaped by technological breakthroughs like advancements in AI, emerging abuse tactics and global events, demanding continuous agility from our industry,” the report noted. Google is committed to deploying cutting-edge technology and collaborating with partners to create a safer online environment.
