Grok AI’s ‘Desi’ Debut: Hindi Slang and Sassy Banter on X
Elon Musk’s Grok AI chatbot is generating buzz on X (formerly Twitter) for its unexpected responses to Indian users. The AI has embraced colloquial Hindi and delivered witty, sometimes sassy, replies, surprising many.
It all began when a user, after not receiving a response to a query about mutual friends, used a Hindi expletive to address Grok. The AI responded in kind: “Chill kar. Tera ‘10 best mutuals’ ka hisaab laga diya. Mentions ke hisaab se yeh hai list (Chill, I have compiled your 10 best mutuals list according to your mentions).”

Since then, other users have prompted the chatbot with local slang, and Grok has responded with impressive wit in Hindi, English, and other regional languages.
Users are especially surprised by Grok’s human-like interactions, distinguishing it from many competitors. Chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek are more known for their mundane and mechanical answers.
What is Grok?
Developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, Grok 3, launched last month, is claimed to be ten times more capable than its predecessor, Grok 2. This model is designed to excel in reasoning, comprehensive research, and creative tasks.
The project has the influence of Musk, known for his active social media presence and affinity to pop culture and memes into the chatbot. Hence, Grok’s natural responses to Indian users have been received well.
In April 2024, Mr. Musk and the xAI team decided they needed their own data center to build the most advanced AI. The team worked hard and got the first 100,000 GPUs operational in just 122 days. This major computing power has continuously improved Grok, allowing it to function in three modes: DeepSearch, Think, and Big Mind.
