Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital to Open, Boosting Healthcare in Rapidly Growing Area
Cypress, TX – The Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital is preparing to open its doors on Monday, offering a new healthcare option to a region experiencing significant population growth.
Located at 24500 Northwest Freeway, the hospital is Houston Methodist’s eighth in the greater Houston area. The $685 million facility has been designed as a “smart hospital,” integrating the latest medical technology to enhance patient care.

Population growth in the Cy-Fair area has driven the need for expanded healthcare services. According to the American Community Survey, the population within the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD rose from approximately 510,000 in 2013 to about 622,000 in 2023.
“As people want to move here, we need to be able to provide those (health care) services,” said Trent Fulin, CEO and senior vice president of Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital. “There’s no reason that folks need to travel outside of Cypress to seek high-level care.”
Houston Methodist already operates an emergency care center, primary care groups, and other services in the Cy-Fair area, and has observed increasing demand at these locations in recent years, Fulin noted.

Cutting-Edge Technology
The hospital is opening with 100 beds but is designed to expand its capacity to 276 beds based on community needs. The 105-acre campus offers the potential for a further expansion that could accommodate up to 500 beds in the future, Fulin said.
Fulin stated, “We will continue to grow as the community grows. What we’ve done is (create) a really flexible framework to be able to quickly adapt and expand.”

The hospital has hired 750 employees and plans to add more in the future, according to Fulin.
The facility features 18 emergency department beds, nine operating rooms, 18 childbirth center rooms, and eight neonatal ICU rooms, with the capacity to increase to 29 emergency department beds and 15 operating rooms. The campus also houses two medical buildings that will provide some cancer services, a rehab center, an orthopedic center, and other specialty clinics.

Smart Hospital of the Future
Each patient room is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including voice command capabilities enabling patients to adjust room temperature, call for a nurse, or order meals. A digital whiteboard in each room will display a patient’s treatment plan, along with the names and photos of their healthcare providers. The hospital plans to utilize smart technology to record and transcribe conversations with patients, streamlining documentation for doctors and nurses.

“Clinical documentation takes a lot of time. It’s burdensome,” Fulin explained. “…Instead of being in front of a computer, (clinicians) are having a natural conversation and really listening to the patient.”
Rooms are also equipped with sensors to monitor patient movement, alerting staff if a patient falls or requires assistance.

Houston Methodist announced plans for the hospital in 2021 and initiated construction the following summer. The Cypress hospital represents the health system’s latest investment in Houston’s suburban areas, following recent expansions in The Woodlands and Baytown, as well as the opening of an emergency care center in Clear Lake.

Additional plans include a multi-specialty clinic in The Woodlands and the expansion of Houston Methodist West Hospital in Katy.
