Every time you ask a question to an AI chatbot like ChatGPT, you’re likely enriching a handful of monopolies. The same applies if you use any of ChatGPT’s many competitors. Nearly all of them rely on chips from Nvidia Corp. to function. In fact, Nvidia claims about 92% of the market for AI accelerators, the key components powering these chatbots.
Nvidia relies on a trio of partners to produce its semiconductors: SK Hynix Inc. of South Korea, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., and ASML Holding NV of the Netherlands. Each supplier holds a market position that rivals or surpasses Nvidia’s own stronghold.
