Sakana AI, a Japanese technology startup, has made history. The company announced on Wednesday that its AI, dubbed AI Scientist-v2, has authored the first peer-reviewed scientific paper.

The paper, generated by AI Scientist-v2, successfully navigated the peer-review process at a workshop held at the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR), a leading AI conference. This version is an updated iteration of the original AI Scientist, which was initially introduced in August.

“We’re proud to announce that a paper produced by the AI Scientist-v2 passed the peer-review process at a workshop in ICLR (International Conference on Learning Representations), a top AI conference,” the company stated on X, formerly known as Twitter. The company noted that the AI Scientist-v2 paper underwent the same rigorous scrutiny that human researchers face.

Sakana AI collaborated with the University of British Columbia and the University of Oxford on this project. The AI Scientist program is designed to autonomously handle the entire scientific research process, from conceptualization to final report.

Details about the advanced AI Scientist-v2 will be released soon, the company confirmed. Addressing the future capabilities of such AI programs, the company said, “We believe the next generations of The AI Scientist will usher in a new era in science,” noting the enormous progress AI has made. They added, “But this is just the beginning. We expect AI to continue to improve, potentially exponentially. At some point in the future, AI will probably be able to generate papers at and beyond human levels.”
