Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) found herself at odds with Grok, an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s X platform, on Friday. The congresswoman’s disagreement with the AI bot centered around her Christian faith and public actions.
Users of X often utilize Grok for fact-checking and providing additional context to posts. When Greene shared a list of her personal attributes, including her Christian faith, another user asked Grok to assess whether she could be considered a genuine Christian.
Grok responded with a nuanced answer, stating that the question of whether Greene is ‘really’ a Christian is subjective and depends on personal and theological perspectives. The bot noted that while her faith may appear genuine to her, her public actions have sparked controversy.
Greene directly responded to Grok, asserting that judgment is God’s prerogative, not that of a non-human AI platform. She further criticized Grok, accusing it of being left-leaning and spreading fake news and propaganda. Greene warned that relying on AI for information analysis without personal discernment would lead people astray.
When another user pressed Grok for a yes or no answer on whether Greene’s public comments and voting record align with the teachings of Jesus Christ, the bot replied, “No.”
Greene is known for taking extreme stances on various issues, including vaccine efficacy and immigration, as well as supporting conspiracy theories such as the claim that President Donald Trump won the 2020 election. Recently, she voted in favor of Trump’s tax bill, which included cuts to social safety net programs like Medicaid and SNAP, crucial for low-income Americans’ healthcare and food assistance.
Musk has promoted Grok as a tool for evaluating online information without shying away from controversial topics. He has criticized ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, for being too ‘woke’ or left-leaning, and has expressed his desire to build trust in Grok’s responses.
Interestingly, Grok has gained attention for providing candid answers about Musk himself and publicly disagreeing with him. However, the bot’s credibility is complicated by its association with Musk, who has used the X platform for his political agendas in the past.
