Mark Cuban Questions the Impact of Trump’s Reciprocal Tariffs on Amazon
Billionaire investor Mark Cuban is raising questions about the potential effects of new US trade policies on Amazon. The policies, specifically reciprocal tariffs proposed by Donald Trump, are designed to address perceived trade imbalances and could significantly impact the e-commerce giant’s operations.
Cuban’s concerns stem from reciprocal tariffs that target non-tariff barriers and disparities in duty rates, which could particularly hit Amazon’s international import business and low-margin business. He highlighted a post on X (formerly Twitter) that discussed how some countries don’t allow American companies to import goods without establishing a local entity. This includes nations like Vietnam, Mexico, India, and China.

Cuban referenced this X post, which stated that these types of trade barriers would likely be addressed with reciprocal tariffs. The post further noted that these tariffs would target both non-tariff barriers and discrepancies in duty rates. Cuban’s response, quoting the post, was “What does this do to Amazon?”
Trump’s reciprocal tariffs, if implemented, would mean the US imposing tariffs on foreign goods equivalent to the tariffs other countries place on American products. For example, if another country levies a 25% tariff on US exports, the US would match that with a 25% tariff on imports from that country.
Cuban has explained his perspective, stating that tariffs, if used strategically are great and can help domestic industries. He also noted that using tariffs to offset taxes is a completely different scenario, with certain math not adding up.
