Meta is reportedly developing a standalone artificial intelligence application, as reported by CNBC. This move is set to join its existing suite of independent offerings, including Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
Meta is actively competing with industry leaders such as Amazon, OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft in the race to develop sophisticated AI models. The company has been gradually integrating AI technology into its platforms since the debut of its own AI chatbot in 2023.
A dedicated AI app would align with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s goal of establishing the most widely used AI assistant globally. According to sources cited by CNBC, Meta intends to launch this standalone AI app by the middle of this year. This announcement follows OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s response on X (formerly Twitter), where he shared a link to the CNBC report and humorously alluded to potentially launching a social app.
Meta is also exploring a paid subscription model for its AI platform, mirroring the revenue strategy adopted by OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, according to the report. Meta has declined to provide comments on the matter.
The tech giant recently revealed substantial profit and revenue growth for 2024, alongside ambitious plans to expand its AI infrastructure in the coming year. “I expect this is going to be the year when a highly intelligent and personalized AI assistant reaches more than 1 billion people, and I expect Meta AI to be that leading Assistant,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated during the earnings call.
Furthermore, the emergence of DeepSeek, a more cost-effective AI model developed by a Chinese startup, has reportedly prompted Meta to create dedicated teams to study and potentially incorporate these innovations into its own Llama AI models.
