Microsoft 365 Products Experience Brief Outage

Microsoft 365 products, including Outlook and OneDrive, experienced an outage on Saturday afternoon, March 1st, but service was quickly restored after a fix was implemented to address a potential code error.

Reports of the outage surged around 2 p.m. Arizona time, as indicated by Downdetector, operated by data analysts Ookla, which documented an increase of over 25,000 reports of Microsoft 365 services being offline.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., Microsoft acknowledged the issue on the social platform X, stating they were “investigating an issue in which users may be unable to access Outlook features and services.”

The company followed up with additional posts that indicated the problem also affected other Microsoft 365 services, although no estimated time for resolution was immediately provided.

Initially, Microsoft’s service health webpage did not reflect any problems with products like Outlook and OneDrive as of 2:45 p.m. However, Microsoft later stated on X that a resolution was imminent, as they were “reverting the suspected code” to fix the issue.

The website was updated to reflect that Microsoft 365 products designed for consumer use were impacted, including Microsoft Teams, Outlook, the email server Hotmail.com, and the calendar service Live.com.

Around 4 p.m., the tech company announced that the affected products were returning “to a healthy state.” Further updates were expected around 6 p.m., according to the service health page.

“We’ve entered a period of extended monitoring to ensure that the service remains stable, and to address any outstanding impact to other Microsoft 365 services,” the company stated.

Around the same time, Downdetector also showed a significant decline in reports of Microsoft 365 products being offline.
