Microsoft 365 Services Briefly Experience Outage

Microsoft 365 products, including Outlook and OneDrive, experienced an outage on Saturday afternoon, March 1st, according to the tech company. However, services began to return to normal following a fix to a suspected code issue.

Downdetector, a service operated by data analysts Ookla, indicated a spike of over 25,000 reports of Microsoft 365 and its related products malfunctioning, beginning around 2 p.m. Arizona time.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., Microsoft acknowledged the issue via a post on X, stating they were, “investigating an issue in which users may be unable to access Outlook features and services.”

The company’s X account later updated the post, indicating that the issue was affecting various Microsoft 365 services. However, an estimated time for resolution was not provided initially.

At first, Microsoft’s service health webpage did not report any issues across products like Outlook and OneDrive at 2:45 p.m. However, Microsoft’s X account announced that a fix was imminent after the company had “reverted the suspected code” to address the outage.

The service health website was subsequently updated to reflect that Microsoft 365 products for a consumer audience were affected. This included Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Hotmail.com, and the Live.com calendar service.

Around 4 p.m., Microsoft announced that the affected products were returning “to a healthy state.” The company also stated that an additional update would be available around 6 p.m., according to the service health page.

“We’ve entered a period of extended monitoring to ensure that the service remains stable, and to address any outstanding impact to other Microsoft 365 services,” the tech company stated.

Around the same time, Downdetector also showed a significant decline in reports of Microsoft 365 products being offline.
