Microsoft to Replace Remote Desktop Connection App with Advanced Windows App
Microsoft has announced it will retire its Remote Desktop application, urging users to switch to the Windows App. The change is expected to streamline access to various Windows services.
On March 10, 2025, Microsoft declared that it would cease supporting its Remote Desktop app, available through the Microsoft Store, starting May 27, 2025. The company will replace it with a more advanced Windows App. Microsoft is presently recommending that users who have connected the app to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box, transition to the new app for uninterrupted access.
However, for those who use the Remote Desktop Connection app solely for connecting to remote desktops, Microsoft suggests continuing to use the same app until these services are fully available on the Windows App. Users will also have the option to manually download and install the Remote Desktop client’s standalone installer, particularly enterprise customers who depend on this service to deploy remote desktop clients.
Any requests made after May 27, 2025, to connect to the aforementioned services will be blocked. Microsoft also advised users to manually uninstall the Remote Desktop app after transitioning to the new Windows App to avoid confusion.
Launched in September 2024, the new Windows App offers a unified interface for accessing multiple Windows services, including Cloud PCs and virtual desktops. Compared to its predecessor, the new app introduces several new capabilities, such as a customizable home screen, multi-monitor support, dynamic display resolution, device redirection, Microsoft Teams optimization, and seamless account switching.
