Microsoft will retire Skype in May 2025, directing its resources toward Microsoft Teams (free), its central communication and collaboration platform. This move comes as the way we communicate continues to evolve. From early instant messaging to today’s video calls, technology has consistently reshaped how we connect.
To streamline our consumer communication options and better respond to user needs, we are retiring Skype in May 2025. Simultaneously, we’ll focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub. Teams offers many of the core features familiar to Skype users, like one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Additionally, Teams provides enhanced features like meeting hosting, calendar management, and the creation and participation in free communities.
Hundreds of millions already leverage Teams as their primary teamwork hub, staying connected and engaged at work, school, and home. Over the past two years, consumer users’ meeting minutes on Teams have increased fourfold, demonstrating Teams’ value for everyday communication and collaboration. Looking ahead, we are enthusiastic about the opportunities this transition brings. We are committed to supporting people’s daily connections, starting with seamless login integration for Skype users into Teams.
What Happens Next for Skype Users?
During the transition period, users will have two main options:
-
Transition to Microsoft Teams for Free: Over the coming days, Skype users will be able to sign in to Teams (free) on any supported device using their existing Skype credentials. This functionality is rolling out first to participants in both the Teams and Skype Insider programs. Upon logging into Teams via a Skype account, chats and contacts will automatically appear, allowing users to easily resume conversations.
During the transition, Teams users can contact and chat with Skype users, and vice-versa, ensuring continued connectivity despite platform differences.
-
Export Skype Data: Users hesitant to switch can export data, including chats, contacts, and call history. Skype will remain operational until May 5, 2025, giving users sufficient time to explore Teams and decide on their preferred option.
Getting Started with Microsoft Teams for Free
Moving to Teams is a straightforward process, and users can continue using Skype during the transition. To get started:
- Download Teams onto your device from the official Microsoft Teams website.
- Log in with your existing Skype credentials.
- Begin using Teams, where your Skype chats and contacts will already be available.
To help facilitate this transition, a comprehensive step-by-step guide is available to assist users in setting up Teams and maximizing its features.
Changes to Paid Skype Features
Going forward, new customers will no longer be able to purchase paid Skype features. This includes Skype Credit and subscription plans enabling international and domestic calls. Existing Skype subscription users can continue to use their Skype Credits and subscriptions up until their subsequent renewal date. Those with Skype Credit can keep utilizing their remaining balance.
After May 5, 2025, the Skype Dial Pad will be accessible to remaining paid users through the Skype web portal and within Teams.
We are immensely grateful for your role in the Skype community. Skype has played a significant part in modern communications, and we are honored to have been part of your journey. We understand that changes can be challenging. Therefore, we are committed to helping you navigate through this transition. We are very enthusiastic about the novel opportunities Teams brings, and we’re dedicated to helping you stay connected.
