Microsoft highlights that Teams is a more comprehensive platform, offering many of Skype’s core features like one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Teams also boasts additional features like meeting hosting, calendar management, and community building capabilities.
What’s Next for Skype Users?
During the transition period, Skype users will have two primary options: switch to Teams or export their data. Microsoft will soon offer a way for Skype users to sign in to the free Teams version using their existing Skype credentials. Upon logging in, existing chats and contacts will automatically appear within Teams. Users can continue to call and chat with their Skype contacts while using Teams.
For those who choose not to migrate, Microsoft is providing data export options, including chats, contacts, and call history.
Additionally, Microsoft will discontinue paid Skype features for new users, including Skype Credit and subscriptions for international and domestic calls. Existing subscription users can continue using these until their next renewal period ends. After May 5, 2025, any remaining paid users will still have access to the Skype Dial Pad through the Skype web portal and within Teams.
