Microsoft Corp. announced on Friday that it will retire Skype, a pioneering service in internet-based phone and video calls.
Skype, launched during the early 2000s tech boom, will see its users transitioned to free accounts on Microsoft Teams. Teams has become the company’s primary tool for videoconferencing and workplace communication and has grown to be a significant competitor to Salesforce Inc.’s Slack.
Skype is slated to be officially retired in May.
