Microsoft has launched Dragon Copilot, an innovative AI voice assistant designed to revolutionize workflows in the healthcare industry. This new tool leverages advanced voice dictation and ambient listening capabilities to automate clinical documentation and reduce administrative tasks, ultimately improving patient care and alleviating clinician burnout.

Dragon Copilot builds upon the technology of Dragon Medical One and DAX Copilot, both developed by Nuance, a company Microsoft acquired in 2021. The AI assistant can seamlessly integrate with Electronic Health Records (EHRs) to automatically generate clinical documentation, conduct medical information searches, and create referral letters as well as after-visit summaries. It also supports multilingual ambient note-taking and natural language dictation, offering a versatile solution for healthcare professionals.
Joe Petro, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Health and Life Sciences Solutions and Platforms, highlighted the immense potential of AI in transforming healthcare. “At Microsoft, we have long believed that AI has the incredible potential to free clinicians from the administrative burden in healthcare and enable them to refocus on taking care of patients,” Petro stated.
Dragon Copilot’s secure, modern architecture facilitates easy integration with major EHR systems, including Epic. Clinicians benefit from a unified experience, allowing them to dictate notes, automate various tasks, and access relevant medical information from reliable sources like the CDC and FDA. This streamlined workflow significantly reduces the time spent on administrative duties, thereby allowing clinicians to dedicate more focus on their key responsibility: patient care.
Early results from the use of Dragon Copilot are promising. Surveys conducted by Microsoft indicate that clinicians using the AI assistant experienced less burnout, and a remarkable 93% of patients reported an improved overall experience. These findings highlight the significant positive impact the technology is having on both healthcare professionals and patients.
Dragon Copilot is slated for availability in the US and Canada starting in May, followed by expansions into other countries, including the UK, the Netherlands, France, and Germany. This phased rollout strategy aims to bring the benefits of this innovative technology to the global healthcare landscape.
