Microsoft is rapidly advancing its Generative AI tools, a direct response to the groundbreaking capabilities of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Keeping pace with Microsoft’s innovation and investment requires attention, but here we’ll examine two recent Copilot developments: enhancements to web search and improvements to Copilot security.
AI-Powered Search Integration
While Microsoft has not yet issued an official statement, various reports confirm that they are “continuing to experiment and iterate with generative search.” This involves new AI search features integrated into Microsoft Bing, currently undergoing testing in select regions. Initially, users accessed Copilot via a dedicated button within Bing, which then redirected to a separate Copilot webpage. The new approach integrates AI directly into search results, providing on-page summaries with citations and relevant website links. Users can also pose follow-up questions that Copilot will contextually integrate into the workflow, and can toggle between AI-powered and standard searches.
This new search option puts Microsoft in direct competition with Google, which is also actively developing its own AI search capabilities.
Enhanced Security with Expanded Bug Bounty Program
Microsoft launched its AI bug bounty initiative in October 2023, and has now announced a series of updates to its Copilot (AI) Bounty Program. The updates aim to improve the program’s effectiveness, encourage broader participation, and ensure the robustness and security of Copilot consumer products.
The most significant changes include:
- Integration of Microsoft Vulnerability Severity Classification: The program now incorporates the Microsoft Vulnerability Severity Classification for Online Services (Online Services Bug Bar), alongside the existing AI Systems Bug Bar, to help users better assess the level of vulnerability.
- Increased Incentives: The program expands bounty rewards to include vulnerabilities classified as having moderate severity, with rewards up to $5,000.
- Expanded Scope: The Copilot (AI) Bounty Program now covers Copilot for Telegram, Copilot for WhatsApp, copilot.microsoft.com, and copilot.ai.
Microsoft encourages security researchers, developers, and enthusiasts to participate in the Copilot (AI) Bounty Program to identify vulnerabilities, contribute to product security, and earn rewards.
These updates and initiatives demonstrate Microsoft’s commitment to expanding the reach and impact of Copilot while prioritizing robust security for enterprise applications and use cases.
