Microsoft has acknowledged a recent error in a Windows 11 update that unintentionally uninstalled the Copilot app. The update, which rolled out on March 11, removed the AI assistant from affected PCs.
According to a Microsoft support article cited by The Verge, the update “unintentionally uninstalled and unpinned” the Copilot app. Microsoft is aware of the issue and is “working on a resolution to address this issue.” In the meantime, users seeking to restore Copilot can reinstall it from the Microsoft Store and manually pin it to their taskbar.
The removal of Copilot, whether intentional or accidental, is a notable event, given Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to integrate the AI assistant into its products. Since its introduction to Windows in 2023, some users have sought ways to remove it, but up until this update, it required extra steps — a process the update inadvertently streamlined.
Microsoft views Copilot’s versatility as a key feature that will make it useful in a variety of settings. The company recently announced plans for “Copilot for Gaming,” designed for use within the Xbox app to assist players with games. Microsoft has also begun offering some premium AI features, such as Copilot’s Voice mode, free of charge. The Verge reports that Microsoft plans to announce even more new Copilot features at an event celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary in April.
