Microsoft to End Windows 10 Support: What You Need to Know

Millions of computers are at risk of facing unfixable glitches and bugs that could render laptops and PCs unusable due to Microsoft’s planned end of support for Windows 10 software on October 14, 2025. The tech giant has warned that after this date, it will no longer provide free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.

    Impact on Computer Owners

Roughly 900 million computer owners will be affected by this decision. While 500 million PCs currently running on Windows 10 can upgrade to Windows 11, approximately 400 million PCs, particularly those built in 2008 or earlier, won’t be able to support the newer operating system due to specific hardware requirements.

Checking Eligibility for Windows 11 Upgrade

To check if your Windows 10 PC is eligible for a Windows 11 upgrade, follow these steps:

    1. Select the Start button
    2. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update

If the option for Windows 11 appears, you’re eligible for the upgrade. Otherwise, you may need to consider purchasing a new PC.

    Security Concerns

The end of support for Windows 10 raises significant security concerns. Without Microsoft’s support, any bugs and glitches that arise will not be fixed, leaving these systems vulnerable to hackers, malware, viruses, and ransomware.

Campaigners have warned that this decision could lead to the largest surge in discarded computers in history, posing dire consequences for both consumers and the environment. Microsoft had previously allowed individuals to extend support for Windows 10 for a fee following a campaign by the public interest advocacy group PIRG.

    Environmental Impact

The environmental impact of disposing of millions of PCs is a significant concern. Campaigners have highlighted that the lack of support for Windows 10 will not only create e-waste but also increase security risks.

As the deadline approaches, computer owners must take action to protect their devices and data. Upgrading to Windows 11 or purchasing new hardware are the recommended solutions to avoid potential security threats.
