Stanford RegLab and the Niskanen Center invite you to a virtual discussion on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at 3:00 pm ET. The event will focus on how technology and institutional design can be leveraged to make government operations more effective.

A recent collaboration between Stanford RegLab and the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office demonstrates the potential of this approach. By using AI to analyze San Francisco’s 16-million-word municipal code and regulations, the collaboration identified outdated or duplicative reporting requirements. This analysis led to a legislative proposal aimed at eliminating or consolidating 36% of reports, showcasing how technology can modernize government, reduce unnecessary burdens, and enhance capacity for more critical tasks.

The discussion will feature insights from:

    • Daniel Ho, Faculty Director of Stanford Regulation, Evaluation, and Governance Lab (RegLab)
    • David Chiu, City Attorney of San Francisco
    • Jen Pahlka, Senior Fellow at Niskanen State Capacity, who will moderate the conversation

The event will delve into the development of this initiative, its achievements, and its implications for the future of tech-enabled governance across the United States.
