Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc.’s banking arm, MUFG Bank Ltd., has enlisted the services of startup Sakana AI to power its systems with artificial intelligence (AI) under a three-year contract. According to Sakana AI’s blog post on Monday, MUFG Bank will utilize Sakana’s reasoning models to develop internal software that supports the bank’s decision-making processes.
Implementation Timeline
The partnership will begin with a pilot phase lasting between 6 to 12 months, after which a broader deployment of Sakana’s AI models is expected to commence in the second year. This move is part of a larger trend among Japanese financial giants turning to digital technologies to enhance operational efficiency.

The integration of AI is anticipated to significantly bolster MUFG Bank’s operational capabilities by providing advanced decision-making support through sophisticated reasoning models. As part of its digital transformation strategy, MUFG Bank joins other major financial institutions in Japan in embracing cutting-edge technologies to remain competitive in an increasingly digital landscape.
