NASA’s Space Lasers: Revolutionizing Deep Space Communications
Data transmission via laser, also known as optical communications, holds the potential to revolutionize deep space communication, enabling ultra-high definition video and complex science data transfer across the solar system. NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communication (DSOC) experiment, a technology demonstration that launched aboard the Psyche mission in October 2023, is leading the way.

DSOC has already successfully tested high-bandwidth laser communications beyond the Moon and recently reached another milestone by transmitting data from Mars orbit. With data rates 10-100 times higher than radio frequencies, laser communications could support robotic spacecraft throughout our solar system and future astronauts exploring Mars.
To discuss these achievements and what’s ahead for the experiment, Dr. Angel E. Velasco and Dr. Joseph Kovalik, members of the DSOC team, will share the latest developments and insights. We’ll also hear from Nikki Wyrick and Dr. Ian O’Neill.
Speakers:
-
Dr. Angel E. Velasco: DSOC ground laser transmitter lead, optical communications engineer.
-
Dr. Joseph Kovalik: DSOC flight integration & test lead, optical communications engineer.
-
Nikki Wyrick: Communications and education directorate at NASA JPL.
-
Dr. Ian O’Neill: Media relations specialist, NASA JPL (Co-host).
Laser communication experiments like DSOC promise a leap forward in how we explore the cosmos.
