NATO’s Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) and Palantir Technologies Inc. announced on Monday, March 25, that they had finalized the acquisition of the Palantir Maven Smart System NATO (MSS NATO) for use within NATO’s Allied Command Operations (ACO). The MSS NATO capability is designed to empower commanders and warfighters to safely and securely leverage artificial intelligence (AI) in core military operations.
Key Features of MSS NATO
The MSS NATO provides a common data-enabled warfighting capability to the Alliance, enhancing intelligence fusion and targeting, battlespace awareness and planning, and accelerated decision-making through a wide range of AI applications. Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), the military headquarters of ACO, plans to accelerate the adoption of other novel capabilities being developed across the Alliance, demonstrating a strong partnership between the North American and European technology base.
Implementation Timeline
The contract was completed in just six months, and ACO is expected to begin using the new system within the next 30 days. This development comes against the backdrop of rising anxiety among European NATO members regarding potential changes in US defense commitments.
Strategic Implications
The acquisition is part of NATO’s broader efforts to integrate AI into its military operations. Palantir has a significant track record with the US military, having previously implemented its Maven technology. The company has secured over $2.7 billion in US government contracts since 2009, with more than $1.3 billion coming from the Defense Department. Palantir’s stock surged over 300% in the past 12 months amid expectations of continued defense spending and growing adoption of its AI systems by commercial clients.
Market Reaction
Palantir stock gained 9.29% to $96.65 following the announcement. CNBC’s Jim Cramer has recommended buying Palantir stock, reflecting positive market sentiment towards the company’s prospects in the defense technology sector.
