Harnessing AI for Anticipatory Humanitarian Aid
NetHope is proud to partner with GiveDirectly in a groundbreaking initiative that showcases how AI-powered flood forecasting is revolutionizing anticipatory humanitarian aid. By integrating Google’s cutting-edge flood prediction data with local insights, GiveDirectly is delivering life-saving cash transfers to vulnerable communities in Nigeria and Bangladesh—before disasters strike. This innovative use of AI enhances targeting precision, accelerates response times, and strengthens community resilience against climate-driven shocks.
This case study is the latest in NetHope’s series exploring how AI is reshaping humanitarian action. Building on their examination of Signpost AI, NetHope now turns to GiveDirectly’s anticipatory cash transfer initiative—a collaborative effort with Google Research and JBA Global Resilience. In response to the growing frequency and severity of climate-related disasters, GiveDirectly is piloting an AI-enabled system to deliver early financial support to flood-prone communities, helping families prepare before disaster strikes.
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to transform crisis response, the humanitarian sector must explore ways to harness its potential while addressing associated risks. This case study is part of NetHope’s broader effort to document and share practical examples of AI in action—from anticipatory cash transfers to information access for displaced communities. The goal is to offer actionable insights, spark dialogue, and support humanitarian organizations in adopting AI responsibly and effectively to meet the evolving needs of the communities they serve.
