Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is urging everyone to embrace AI tutors, specifically referencing AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, as invaluable learning tools.
In a recent interview, Huang emphasized the benefits of using AI to learn programming, grasp new concepts, and enhance reasoning skills. “I have [an AI] personal tutor with me all the time,” Huang told Cleo Abram on the YouTube show “Huge Conversations.” He further explained that the AI tutor assists with a wide range of tasks, including programming, writing, analysis, and critical thinking.
Huang’s personal experience underscores his advocacy. He revealed to Salesforce’s Marc Benioff that he uses the paid version of ChatGPT as a personal tutor. Additionally, he uses Perplexity’s AI search engine daily to learn more about subjects like biology.
While platforms like Perplexity and ChatGPT are multi-purpose tools, other AI platforms are developed specifically for tutoring. For instance, Khan Academy’s Khanmigo chatbot offers an always-on tutoring service. “I feel more empowered today, more confident to learn something today,” Huang said of AI’s impact on learning. “The knowledge of almost any particular field, the barriers to that understanding have been reduced.”
Huang stresses the importance of developing skills in prompting AI systems, stating that successful interaction with AI, such as with Grok, ChatGPT, and Gemini, requires expertise in formulating effective prompts. “You can’t just randomly ask [AI] a bunch of questions,” said Huang. “Asking AI to be an assistant to you requires some expertise and artistry in how to prompt it.”
While AI tools offer many advantages, he also acknowledges that they have imperfections. AI still has a high error rate. According to one independent evaluation, OpenAI’s GPT-4o displayed two errors for every 200 responses, while Google’s Gemini 1.0 Pro had 12 mistakes in the same number of responses. McKinsey’s research indicated that AI could potentially displace millions of jobs due to automation. Goldman Sachs predicted that AI would lead to significant job losses or downgrading.
Despite the potential challenges, Huang remains optimistic, convinced that individuals can leverage AI to gain knowledge and skills. This reflects a broader trend of AI’s increasing influence across different sectors.
