OpenAI Seeks Regulatory Relief to Compete with China in AI
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has requested the Trump administration’s assistance in shielding artificial intelligence (AI) companies from the growing number of proposed state regulations. This request is driven by concerns that these regulations could hinder the United States’ ability to compete with China in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
In a 15-page policy document released on Thursday, OpenAI argued that the hundreds of AI-related bills currently under consideration across the US pose a risk to America’s technological advancement, particularly in light of China’s increasing investments in AI. The company expressed concerns that if Chinese developers have unrestricted access to data while US companies face excessive regulation, the AI race could be “effectively over.”
OpenAI suggested that the administration should consider offering regulatory relief to AI companies, irrespective of their size. According to the proposal, this relief, if and when state rules are enacted, would be granted in exchange for voluntary sharing of their AI models with the federal government.
The recommendation was part of OpenAI’s response to a public input request from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The Biden administration’s extensive executive order on AI was previously rescinded by President Donald Trump, who has tasked the science office with creating an AI Action Plan by July.
