OpenAI’s New Cloud Partnership: Reshaping the AI Industry
Microsoft’s early investment in OpenAI was a pivotal move that significantly shaped the artificial intelligence landscape. However, recent developments indicate a shift in this relationship and the broader tech ecosystem.
In 2019, Microsoft made its first major investment in OpenAI, well before the widespread adoption of AI tools like ChatGPT. More recently, in January 2025, Microsoft and OpenAI announced an expansion of their partnership with the Stargate project, designed to build new AI infrastructure.
However, the narrative took a turn when Microsoft revealed it was no longer the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI, which was experiencing rapid growth. This change came amidst OpenAI’s expansion and the introduction of new AI models.
CoreWeave Emerges as OpenAI’s New Partner

OpenAI has since forged a new cloud services partnership with CoreWeave, a cloud-computing startup specializing in providing graphics processing unit (GPU) infrastructure for AI development companies. CoreWeave is now slated to be one of the year’s initial public offerings (IPOs).
OpenAI’s agreement with CoreWeave signifies a substantial commitment, with the company planning to invest $119 billion over several years and receive $350 million in equity. This deal contrasts sharply against Microsoft’s decision to scale back its relationship with CoreWeave due to “delivery issues and missed deadlines,” according to sources cited by the Financial Times.
Implications for CoreWeave’s IPO
Microsoft’s scaling back of its partnership with CoreWeave, especially given Microsoft’s previous significance as CoreWeave’s largest client (accounting for 62% of CoreWeave’s revenue), might have raised concerns among potential investors. Nevertheless, OpenAI’s commitment could mitigate these concerns, particularly as CoreWeave plans to raise $4 billion through its IPO. Experts observe that CoreWeave’s business approach can allow it to thrive in the competitive AI market because not all companies require cloud services from hyperscalers like Meta.
CoreWeave’s deal with OpenAI indicates confidence in the company. The startup is also known for its existing association with Nvidia, which currently holds roughly a 5% stake. This association enhances CoreWeave’s position, as it is poised to benefit from the growing demand for AI infrastructure.
As the AI sector continues to evolve, OpenAI’s strategic choices and partnerships highlight the dynamic competitiveness of the AI landscape and the importance of adaptable cloud infrastructure.
